Committing to a musical career, they returned to their Midwestern roots and moved to Minneapolis, a city that has launched many folk and rock acts from Bob Dylan to The Replacements to The Jayhawks. Like these Twin Cities legends, The Pines weave together many musical styles to create their own unique sound that is hip and haunting. Their sound wavers on the edge of traditional acoustic/roots music, but embraces the nuances of today's indie-rock and blues music THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2010 at 7:30 PM – Adults $15, Students $9 Every holiday season bustles with the sounds — and stress — of the season. Simple Gifts, the six-member ensemble led by award-winning musician Billy McLaughlin, performs acoustic instrumental and vocal music that harkens back to a quieter, simpler time. The ensemble performs traditional carols, hymns, and holiday favorites. With Celtic whistle, piano, acoustic guitar, violin and beautifully blended female voices, Simple Gifts combines traditional folk music with more modern elements that both soothe and inspire listeners.
Independent Music Award Winners for Best Blues CD THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2011 at 7:30 PM – Adults $15, Students $9 Iowa roots blues duo Joe and Vicki Price’s CD “Rain or Shine” won the Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD this past year. The award brings them some well-deserved national and international recognition. Joe and Vicki have been playing together for over 30 years and have learned from some of the greats such as John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Pinetop Perkins among others. Their music is the real deal, flavored more to the juke joint end of the blues… rough and tumble, and tons of fun. From coast to coast, the Price’s singular vision and dazzling, irresistible live performances continue to etch a steady upward arc.
Often cited as one of the world’s top finger-style, steel-string acoustic guitarists, GRAMMY® nominee Alex de Grassi brings a unique voice to the art of acoustic guitar with his evocative compositions and arrangements, a highly-orchestrated sound, and sheer virtuosity. His playing weaves together melody, counter-melody, bass, harmony, rhythm, and cross-rhythms creating a canvas of sound unheard in solo guitar performance. Using a broad palette of techniques and timbre, and driven by a unique sense of composition, his rich performances take the listener beyond the instrument. Down Beat Magazine describes his playing “…as intricate and subtle as a sparkling crystal.”
