Shattuck-St. Mary’s School students traveled to Faribault’s Bluebird Cakery for a crash course on cake decorating and a behind-the-scenes look at a thriving local business on Monday, January 9 as part of a recent ScholarShift module.
Following a short tour of the facility, module participants headed upstairs to the Cakery kitchen. Led by Bluebird Cakery’s professional cake decorator, each participant began by applying a layer of frosting to their plain cake.
After evenly distributing their base frosting, students got to work mixing different colors of frosting for application around the edges of the cake. Once the frosting options were prepared, students learned the techniques of creating flower, rosetta, and leaf designs on their cakes before finishing them off.
The group will meet again on Friday to apply some of the techniques learned during Monday’s session and make a cake for friends or a family member.
