SSM Families: Meet the Baileys

January 26, 2017

“Changing careers at age 41 was very challenging, but the SSM community welcomed us warmly, and now we’ve made a real home here.” - Rich Bailey

Rich Bailey first heard about Shattuck-St. Mary’s in 1989 when he was a sophomore at Macalester College. During soccer training camp, he met Andy Hall ’87 and learned about Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Over the next several years, Rich met many more people from SSM, many of whom became lifelong friends. He also worked with several SSM alums at WolfNet Technologies for over a decade. “At one point, it was said I knew more people from Shattuck-St. Mary’s than anyone else in the world who had never been to the School,” Rich said. “That changed when Tabitha was hired as a history teacher and athletic trainer in 2008. When our daughter Kaitlin was born less than two years later, I started to wonder what it would be like to return to teaching, and become a permanent member of the SSM community.”

In 2011, Rich was hired to teach history at the Upper School. “This was not an easy decision to leave a job of 12 years and a recently refinanced South Minneapolis home, and move our entire family to Faribault,” Rich remembers. “Changing careers at age 41 was very challenging, but the SSM community welcomed us warmly, and now we’ve made a real home here.”

Rich and Tabitha are both faculty members in the History Department. Rich has coached boys’ interscholastic soccer and basketball. Tabitha is the Head Dorm Parent at St. Mary’s Hall. And, the Baileys are happy to be raising their daughter at SSM. “Kaitlin has had the opportunity to see some of the best musicians, athletes, and performers from all over the world. She has been able to meet students from six different continents and many different countries. The girls in St. Mary’s Hall are so nice to Kaitlin and are great role models, and love to visit with our dog Rosa and our adventurous cat Puss ’n Boots. We can’t imagine doing anything else.”
