Senior Speeches: Finding Strength Within

March 20, 2017

“As long as I believe, I can slash through any obstacle in my life.”

Each year, seniors at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School deliver a speech to their peers on a topic of their choosing in the Newhall Auditorium. Often equal parts clever and moving, emotional and personal, each speech offers a glimpse into the lives, experiences, struggles, and triumphs of SSM seniors.

Periodically throughout the 2016-2017 school year, we will share excerpts of those speeches with the SSM community, and hope that you enjoy the humor, wisdom, and powerful reflections conveyed by our senior students.

“Throughout the five years I’ve been here at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, I have had the same core group of best friends. They are always keeping me entertained, and attempting to keep me in line. That’s what makes these five years the most memorable years of my life.

“… No matter what paths we take in life, I will always stay in touch with these guys. They have had such a huge impact on my life, and I expect them to keep impacting my life in a positive way throughout all of the remaining years that I have left. You guys are great, and I can’t thank you enough for everything that you have done for me.”

- Jonathan Hillesheim

“I hated facing everything alone, so I convinced myself that my drawings were alive, standing by my side, but now I understand that I know the answer to my dilemma is me. As long as I believe, I can slash through any obstacle in my life.

“With newly acquired strength, I completed the project, graduated, passed the overseas scholarship test, and… anyway, it’s taken years but I have found the place I have been looking for. Thank you for fulfilling my dreams, Shattuck-St. Mary’s!”
