A Year of Notable Achievements for Pre-Conservatory Musicians

SSM student-musicians have had an amazing year! They celebrated with a spring recital in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd and recognized their graduating seniors.

In October, Harrison Oh ’19, Juntak Lee ’20, and James Thompson ’21 won Performance Awards for the Mary West String Competition. Cate Carson ’20 won Grand Prize and performed as a soloist with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra.

In December, Cate Carson ’20, Ana Dinis Perez ’19, James Thompson ’21, and Harrison Oh ’19 were finalists in the Gustavus Adolphus Concerto Competition. Harrison went on to win Grand Prize and performed as a soloist with the Gustavus Adolphus Orchestra.

In January, Cate Carson ’20 won the Karen Holmes Prize and Vinh Nguyen ’20won the Margaret Ankeny Prize in the “Young Person’s Symphony Concert Association” Competition.

In February, Vinh Nguyen ’20, Cate Carson ’20, and Harrison Oh ’19 (as the Andreas Piano Trio) and Kirill Nazarov ’20, Cate Carson ’20, James Thompson ’21, Ana Dinis Perez ’19, and Juntak Lee ’20 (as the Whipple Piano Quintet) tied for 2nd place in the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Chamber Music competition.

In March, Vinh Nguyen ’20 was a featured soloist with the National Vietnamese Orchestra; he played Liszt’s first piano concerto.

In March, James Thompson ’21 was a finalist, Kirill Nazarov ’20 won Honorable Mention, and Cate Carson ’20 won 2nd Prize in the Schubert Club Scholarship Competition.

Also in March, Cate Carson ’20 and Kirill Nazarov ’20 both won 1st prize in their respective divisions in the Thursday Musical Scholarship Competition.

Also, again in March, Cate Carson ’20 won 1st prize in the Rochester Music Guild Competition.

And lastly, in April, Vinh Nguyen ’20 advanced to the semi-finals of the Kaufman Music Center 2019 International Youth Piano Competition. He will compete in the next round in June.
