World-class violinist and graduate of SSM’s Pre-Conservatory Center of Excellence, Magdiell Antequera ’15, returned to campus this past week to work with SSM student musicians as a guest Artist in Residence.

Magdiell spent his week hosting a Masterclass, working with SSM band and orchestra classes, performing a recital at the University of Minnesota School of Music, and presenting a Deep Dive & Dessert discussion with faculty and students before giving a recital in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd.

Originally from Venezuela, Magdiell attended SSM from 2012-2015, where he also studied under Sally O’Reilly at the University of Minnesota. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in music performance at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, while playing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra as a fellow.

Fun fact: he currently plays on an 18th century Joseph Guarnerius copy generously on loan from acclaimed violinist Giora Schmidt.

Magdiell has won and received recognition from important competitions like the solo competition at the Academia Latinoamericana de Violin (Venezuela), the Thursday Musical Competition (Minnesota), the Schubert Club Competition (Minnesota), the Texas Rising Stars, the Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition (Italy), and others. He has also been a scholar of the Schubert Club Competition and the Virtu Foundation.

Aside from his prodigious skill as a violinist, Magdiell was also famous during his time as an SSM student for being an active proponent of Zumba! Classes. The school was thrilled to have his expertise and enthusiasm back again, even if only for a short time.
