This afternoon, Classical Minnesota Public Radio announced that our Pre-Conservatory Center of Excellence violinist Catherine Carson ’20 has been selected out of hundreds of submissions as a 2020 Featured Artist in the Minnesota Varsity competition!
Minnesota Varsity is a competition for classical and musical theater instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as composers, ages 14-18. It exists to “encourage young musicians to make music and to be involved in the process of creation with their peers.”
Entrants were required to submit a performance recording online, from which MPR staff chose the first round of finalists; no more than fifteen “Featured Artists.” All of the Featured Artists will get to make professional recordings of their performances in the MPR Maud Moon Weyerhaeuser Studio, recordings which will be played on-air on Classical MPR. There will also be recorded interview segments.
Going forward, a panel of judges from Minnesota’s vibrant classical music and musical theater community will select four “Showcase Artists” to perform in a Minnesota Varsity show, which will take place at Ted Mann Concert Hall. A fifth Showcase Artist will be chosen via online Audience Vote, which is a way for the rest of the SSM community to get involved and support Cate. Voting will take place from 9:00 a.m. on March 23, 2020 to 11:59 p.m. on April 5, 2020, and each voter may submit one vote per person per email address.
When asked about Cate, Director of the Pre-Conservatory Center of Excellence, Dr. Benjamin Downs, said, “Cate is everything we want to see in our Pre-Conservatory students. She is not only an artist who has developed her musical talent through years of hard work, but also an exemplary student who is admired by her peers for her achievements as much as her humility.”
The final concert at Ted Mann Concert Hall will take place on May 31, 2020. Congratulations to Cate on this amazing achievement and best of luck moving forward in the competition!
