SSM Soccer, Engineering Alum, Releases Debut Single and Continues Musical Success Online

February 01, 2021

Jonah Kagen ’18, an alum of both the Boys Soccer and Engineering Centers of Excellence, is reaching new heights of Instagram and TikTok fame for another passion of his: music. While Jonah is currently a psychology major at Cornell University and continues to enjoy playing a key role on the Men’s Soccer team, he’s taken advantage of the solitude of the pandemic to continue pursuing his passion for creating music.

A global pandemic isn’t the easiest circumstance in which to start a music career, but Jonah has steadily built a strong fan base over the last few months by using TikTok to post covers and duets of popular songs that showcase his unique style and talent with the guitar. Now, he’s up to 315 thousand followers, including famous musician, Andy Grammer.

Jonah initially got Grammer’s attention with a cover of Grammer’s song, “Thousand Faces,” which the musician loved and commented on. Then, Grammer even sang the song with Jonah using the duet feature on TikTok to superimpose a harmony over Jonah’s melody, which turned out beautifully. You can listen to the duet here.

The next step for Jonah in his musical career is releasing his own original music. Over the last few weeks, he teased up the official release for his original song, “Broken,” which arrived on all your favorite music apps on Friday, January 29th. We’re excited to listen to it (on repeat!), and excited to see where Jonah’s music takes him next!

In an Instagram post this summer, Jonah summed up his passion for music when he wrote, “i am the biggest proponent of the idea that music can unify stronger than anything else—stay positive, spread love, be hopeful,” words that can keep us all hopeful during this turbulent time.

Jonah also visited the weCreate Center virtually last spring to host a Deep Dive & Dessert talk with SSM faculty and students about how he pursued his passion for music while at SSM and beyond. Watch April’s Deep Dive recording or read the recap to learn more about Jonah’s early musical journey.
