Grades 9-12: Summer Opera Camp

For talented high school vocalists (grades 9-12) from across the country, this exciting residential camp is held on the beautiful campus of Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minnesota.

Camp offerings:

  • Sessions in diction, acting and movement
  • Daily individual coaching with Minnesota Opera artistic staff
  • College, audition and career guidance

Led by Matt Abernathy, Alisa Magallón, Peter Schleif, Heidi Spesard-Noble, and other Minnesota Opera Artists.

Cost: 

  • $800 – if you sign up for an audition before March 15, 2017
  • $900 – if you sign up for an audition after March 15, 2017

Tuition includes all activities, room and board.

Audition Information:

Recorded auditions for camp accepted until April 17.

Auditions will be held on Monday, April 17 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at the Opera Center, 620 N. 1st St., Minneapolis. An accompanist will be provided. Auditioners must come prepared with one aria or art song. Please no jazz or pop. Additional repertoire is acceptable, but please contact Jamie Andrews at [email protected] before the audition.

A $25 registration fee is required for all campers prior to auditioning. If accepted, fee will be applied to final tuition.

Opera Artist +

For currently enrolled college students.

Opera Artist + is a week-long residential summer camp for college-aged vocal performance, collaborative piano, and music education majors. The camp enhances your performance skills and gives you an understanding of the broader world of professional opera.

Sessions include daily one-on-one vocal coaching, movement classes, round-table discussions with professional artists and a mock audition. Others sessions look at the increasing importance of Teaching Artistry in the field of opera, such as professionalization of the TA field, and changing expectations of opera companies. Also covered are the growing opportunities for teaching in and out of school time teaching and the rapidly growing field of Creative Aging.

  • Dr. Vicki Fingalson: Associate Professor of Voice, University of Wisconsin-Superior
  • Alisa Magallón: Teaching Artist, Minnesota Opera
